Did you know in 1789 the state of North Carolina chartered the first public university in the United States? This was the same year George Washington and John Adams were chosen by an electoral college as President and Vice-President. Construction on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill began in 1793, and the first students were admitted in 1795.
